On Sunday morning, a Green Line trolley and a car collided, shutting down MBTA service on the B line for about an hour. No one on the trolley was injured, but the driver was treated for a cut on his head at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton.

The car accident occurred around 8:30am at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Lake Street. MBTA officials claim the driver ran a red light and crashed into the train. Trolley service was restored an hour later, and an MBTA bus was called to transport riders in the interim.

Authorities are still investigating the MBTA crash.

Earlier this week, a snowmobile crash killed a Massachusetts man, underscoring the importance of traffic safety with potentially icy conditions. Just after 9:30pm on Monday evening, rescue crews arrived at the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene of the snowmobile accident just before midnight Monday evening.

A representative for the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department said that operating the snowmobile at high speeds on a plowed road have contributed to the accident. He adds that in the span of a week, five people have sustained serious bodily injury from snowmobile accidents. Fish and Game officers plan to continue patrolling snowmobile trails, citing riders for reckless operating, and enforcing speed limits.

MIT and Ford Motor Company are beginning research on driver workload and stress. The goal of this new study is to identify ways that in-vehicle technology can reduce driver stress, thus improving safety on the road.

The six-month long project is a continuation of a partnership between Ford and MIT’s AgeLab that began in 2004. They have been working on development for vehicle systems that detect that the state of drivers and can ultimately reduce those drivers’ stress levels. Looking at biometrics like heart rate, eye movement, and skin conductivity, MIT researchers are working on a system that will be part of future Ford vehicles.

Ford hopes that these innovations will become part of driver’s overall wellness plans.

Last week, a single-vehicle accident on Massachusetts’ Interstate 84 near the Bethel-Danbury line injured a 62-year-old man, sending him to Danbury Hospital with “non-life-threatening injuries.”

According to police, the man’s pickup truck crossed from the left lane to the right shoulder and overturned, ejecting the driver from his vehicle. The man reportedly took his eye off the road when he adjusting the truck’s heater.

Massachusetts state police closed the highway completely while emergency medical personnel rushed to the scene of the truck crash. About an hour after the truck crash, they reopened one lane of traffic. As vehicles funneled past the site of the accident, they were reported to be going about 5-10 miles per hour.

The truck accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.

According to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Virginia Health Services center, low blood sugar can pose a hazard to diabetic drivers. The study examined diabetic drivers in Boston, Massachusetts, central Virginia, and Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their average age was about 42 years old.

While driving with low blood sugar did not actually appear to cause a large number of car accidents, roughly a third of the drivers involved in the study said they checked their blood sugar half an hour before having some kind of driving mishap.

The researchers recommend that diabetic drivers suffering from low blood sugar pull over immediately and wait for their blood sugar to rise before getting back on the road to avoid an auto crash.

On Monday evening around 6pm, a plow driver in Plympton, Massachusetts reportedly hit a 47-year-old woman and drove off. The pedestrian accident victim was apparently walking in the street when she was hit. The plow was not plowing snow at the time of the accident.

Police say they are searching for a small SUV with a plow attached to the front. Officials at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston report that the woman who survived the hit and run is in fair condition.

Because pedestrians have no protection against vehicles like cars, trucks, or SUVs, they are extremely vulnerable to injury if they are involved in an accident. Potential injuries include broken bones, brain injuries, internal bleeding, and sometimes death.
